Turkish Airlines has unveiled its new cabin crew uniforms as part of its 85th-anniversary celebrations. The uniforms are the work of Milan-based Haute Couturier Ettore Bilotta. They are inspired by classic elements of Turkish design and culture, incorporating traditional patterns found in artisanal glassware, ceramics and calligraphy with contemporary textures and details. The collection combines shapes and colours found in the Istanbul Bosphorus with a new ‘flow detail’ which symbolises the effortless and dynamic energy flowing through Turkey’s most dynamic city as an intersection between East and West.
The collection of hats, gloves, dresses, bags and accessories feature a deep red and anthracite grey palette. The uniforms of cabin, cockpit, flying chefs, and ground services will be streamlined under a single design approach.
Ettore Billotta, the fashion designer behind the uniforms said, “When I started to design for Turkish Airlines, the first thing that inspired me was Istanbul. This city has been a melting pot for art and civilisation for centuries and has a rare richness as a common heritage of many cultures. I wanted to bring elements from traditional calligraphy and mosaics together with the new interpretations of Turkish motifs, which emphasize modern lines, into foulards and ties to reflect a contrast and duality.”
Cabin crew will wear the new uniforms following the opening of the Istanbul New Airport, the flag carrier’s new home. The flag carrier recently announced that its total revenue for the first half of 2018 has increased significantly by approximately 30 per cent compared to the same period of last year, reaching US$6 billion. It also managed to increase both passenger and cargo revenue in the first half of 2018. The airline managed to increase net operating profit from US$17 million to US$258 million due to increasing demand and unit revenues despite the increasing fuel prices.
Turkish Airlines currently flies to the most destinations in the world and it continues to strengthen its identity as a leading global airline with its ever-expanding flight network. It currently flies to 49 domestic and 255 international destinations in 122 countries. This year it launched flights to Freetown, Samarkand, Krasnodar and Moroni. The Star Alliance member airline has a fleet of 325 aircraft, comprising 215 narrow body, 92 wide body and 18 cargo aircraft. It aims to reach a fleet of 500 aircraft by 2023. Turkish Airlines has around 52 thousand employees with its subsidiaries.
